Doug on stage at French Quarter (2004)
Doug playing with Ozlo at French Quarter--Fall 2004.

Musical Associates

OZLO
Jim Pavett

I've been doing various studio guitar work over the last year (maybe 18 months...time really flies). Below are tunes from several different projects.

Please scroll through the many styles, from Amber's soft and soothing tones to Ozlo's funkiness; Bryan Snyder's edge to Jon Miller's storytelling; Todd Whisler's concepts piece to...well, Ozlo's extreme funkiness.

Ozlo

I'm going to bookend this collection with previews from the upcoming Ozlo album. Playing in Ozlo's band is my full-time gig--everything else is just a fun distraction. We spent alot of time and energy really nailing the songs on the album. If you really like this first tune, scroll down to the bottom of the page and give the other a quick listen, then come back and work your way down the page:)

Ozlo: The Band with our game faces' on:)

Amber Norgaard

Amber had recorded a good chunk of her album while living in Alaska, but had a group of us record the last 4 songs with her in Tucson. We learned them and recorded in one quick shot, with touch up overdubs later. Stylistically, this is singer-songwriter style rock, with a bit of folk influence. Sarah McLaughlin, Jewel...you get the idea.

On stage in Iowa with Amber
I played with Amber in Okoboji, Iowa for her CD release party in August 2004. This is a shot at rehearsal of myself, Mark Lindholm, Jim Pavett, and Amber.

Doug's gear

Doug's gear, mid-session, waiting to be abused. More info on my equipment can be found in the Gear section.

Jon Miller

Jon's an aspiring songwriter who's hoping to shop his songs to publishers and artists. He's a talented performer in his own right, but a bit stage shy. We had fun in the studio with these tracks--I hope he decides to put them out under his own name someday.

Bryan Snyder

I hadn't met Bryan before I went in to the studio the first day to work on his tunes. He's a terrific guy taking his first shot at doing a solo album after years of being in bands. These two tunes are straightforward metal, but the album in general is pretty diverse rock.

  • Alibi - Up-tempo metal tune. I had fun with this solo as I split it in two and traded 4 bar phrases with myself to get the feel of two dueling guitar players. It's one of the faster solos I've recorded (a real hand-cramper)
  • Textures - mid-tempo but heavy with a bluesy rideout solo

Todd Whisler

  • Death of Radio - one piece from a rock concept album. The bass playing on this track is Barry Sparks, the bass player for Dokken (as well as a solo artist). He's played bass with UFO, The Scorpions, Vinnie Moore, Yngwie Malmsteen, Michael Schenker, Ted Nugent, Marty Friedman and many others.

Ozlo

Preview song 2 from the upcoming album (and already available on DVD).

  • Girls Gone Wild - Funky hard rock--cautionary tale about the girls that end up on film...

Ozlo: The Band
Jim Pavett, Dimitri Enriquez and I on stage for Sex Night IV--I'm wincing at the sight of Ozlo doing his strip tease.

More Ozlo...Live!

OK, I hate to end it there, so below are some very loosely performed and recorded tunes from the 4th annual Ozlo's Sex Night. The point of the night is all cover songs that are, you know, about sex, and we learn them in all in about 2 weeks. It's always a fun time.

Please keep in mind that it's a 4 hour show at a bar, so everyone--including band members--had a lot to drink...and there were dancing girls bumping and grinding their way around the stage...and occasionally, one of us would realize we were paying too much attention to the girls and playing in the wrong key...and the backing vocals are spotty at best due to mic problems (and the aforementioned imbibing)...but enough excuses: Enjoy them in the spirit intended!

One last note...I didn't have a chance to edit the tracks so some songs have a bit too much between-song banter on one end or the other...bear with it..and oh yeah, there's not-so-occasional bad words...

Without further ado...some show highlights (or lowlights, as it were):

  • Love Gravy - a Rick James tune performed by Isaac Hayes for the South Park soundtrack
  • Hit It and Quit It - Funkadelic song done in the Nicklebag arrangement. I do some serious synth-type guitar on this one.
  • Pony - Genuwine's slow jam:) Ozlo is the king of Tucson R&B
  • Sex - Berlin's hit with the wonderful Monique Katz on vocals (while Ozlo drank himself silly)
  • Pussy Control - Prince's classic. NOT FOR THE FAINT OF HEART (or ears, the lyrics get a bit rough on this one;) If we sound distracted towards the end, it's 'cause the dancing girls were out of control. Here's a shot that a photographer from Tucson.com snapped. More synth-like guitar--it's actually a cool Vox pedal effect.
  • This Is How We Do It - R&B hit from Montell Jordan--classic Ozlo vocals
  • Do Me - Bell, Biv, Devoe's killer 80's "love" song with instrumental intro that rocks! Background vocals get just a bit rough and Oz blows the change to the bridge...but it's fun!
  • You Can Leave Your Hat On - Classic Joe Cocker tune from the movie 9 1/2 Weeks. End of night, show closer...Ozlo does a striptease! This one clocks in at 11 minutes but worth every bit of download time.
